BIO
Ina Filip is vocal artist of many genres.
She spent several years in India, studying Hindustani Classical singing with the Gundecha Brothers. Gundecha Brothers are among the foremost exponents of Dhrupad - the most ancient and least known branch of classical Indian singing. During her stay, she lived in the Gundecha’s gurukul in Bhopal and learned in the traditional Indian education system, where disciples live with the guru, have daily lessons, and devote all of their time to practice. There, she immersed herself in the Dagar Vani style, a ‘subtradition’ of Dhrupad renowned for its rigorous yet meditative approach to vocal technique and microtuning. It is also considered an in-depth approach to what is currently known as the ‘yoga of sound’.
As an advanced disciple of this tradition, Ina’s work as a performer and teacher, is naturally influenced by these unique styles.
Prior to her studies in Classical Indian music, Ina studied Brazilian music (UFSCar, Brazil) and Pop vocal (UQAM, in Montreal QC). She also studied vocal improvisation techniques with Bobby McFerrin and fellow teachers (Circle Songs), as well as Rhiannon’s students.
As a performer, Ina naturally gravitates towards vocal improvisation in a wide range of contexts. She has collaborated with various DJs and producers at electronic festivals, toured extensively in the yoga circuit (yoga festivals and retreats), and provided vocal accompaniment for circus artists and dance performers. Currently, Ina collaborates with Classical Indian musicians and Contemporary classical composers to develop hybrid Dhrupad works. For more information you can visit www.inafilip.ca.
